Position Description

CLF Ventures seeks a Project Specialist to participate in consulting work for a variety of for-profit, non-profit, and public clients. The Project Specialist will be expected to work independently as well as in teams and can expect to perform a wide range of activities including:

  • Complex research tasks on environmental and energy-related topics from a business client perspective;
  • Implementation support for project siting, renewable energy and stakeholder management projects;
  • Written and oral communications for high level briefings;
  • Proposal writing and business development research;
  • Collecting, analyzing, summarizing and presenting data for internal and external use; and
  • Conducting research to assist in marketing plans for green products.

The candidate should be capable of managing and carrying out assignments with limited supervision, providing support for multiple projects, and advancing our overall mission through creative and strategic contributions to the organization. An ideal candidate will be conversant in a wide variety of technical areas associated with market-based environmental activities such as energy generation (particularly renewable), transmission, and conservation; urban land-use and natural resource management, smart growth/transit-oriented development issues; ground and surface water resources; and state/local permitting for new development.

Advanced analytical skills and an understanding of the legal, environmental, political, economic, and social aspects of the work are necessary. The candidate must be able to work proficiently in both technical and policy arenas to assist public and private-sector clients. He or she must also possess excellent skills for interacting with external team members, scientists, government officials and community stakeholders. The candidate must be comfortable with public interface and be willing to spend occasional weekends and nights at public meetings or hearings. Travel, sometimes overnight, within New England may be frequent.


Candidate Education and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science/studies/resource management with related work in land-use planning, public policy, and/or business management. Some graduate education is preferred especially in fields of renewable energy, business, environmental policy, natural resource management or urban planning.
  • Background in environmental policy or planning and familiarity with energy and environmental issues.
  • Ability to work well with and meaningfully engage people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a consulting practice or similar environment.
  • A track record of taking risks, translating creative ideas into action, and achieving tangible and sustained results.
  • Familiarity with and an appreciation of, the operation and culture of a non-profit organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and quantitative skills, as well as excellent written and verbal presentation abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Power Point, and Excel. Familiarity with any of the following is also desirable: Microsoft Project, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Access, HTML/Dreamweaver.
  • Demonstrated professional or personal involvement in environmental protection and/or conservation. A passion for the mission of CLFV.
  • Business development (including proposal development or grant writing) and strategic marketing and communication skills.
  • Valid drivers license
  • Creativity, tenacity, good humor, and a high level of energy.

Established in 1997, CLF Ventures (CLFV) works with private and public sector clients to implement projects that have demonstrable environmental gain and economic advantage. Our consulting services assist organizations, businesses and industries in the development of strategies and tools to reduce their environmental footprint. At the same time, payments for our services generate revenues to support the on-going advocacy work of the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF).

CLF is the oldest and largest regional environmental advocacy organization in the United States. Based in New England, CLF's attorneys, scientists, economists, and policy experts develop and implement strategies that conserve natural resources, protect public health, and promote vital communities. CLFV is incorporated as a "support organization" and non-profit affiliate of CLF. We leverage our technical, regulatory and outreach expertise to align stakeholder interests and reduce project uncertainty to solve our clients' complex environmental problems.
