Introduction

The Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Shareholders' Alliance, created in May 2008, is a nonprofit trade organization of reef fish fishermen and others seeking the economic, conservation and social benefits of a viable and modern commercial fishing industry. The Alliance's mission is to unify and strengthen the reef fish industry to achieve sustainability and accountability using individual fishing quotas to manage the catch. Members strive to conserve fish and reduce bycatch, protect the marine environment, improve safety and enhance economic value. They work with buyers and distributors to give consumers year-round access to high-quality, sustainable seafood.

We seek a committed, responsible, energetic, and professional individual to lead this effort. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors to implement the priorities and workplans of the Alliance, interacting with diverse groups of stakeholders and government agencies. Location for this position is negotiable in any of the Gulf states. This is a great opportunity for the right individual committed to sustainable fisheries.


Duties

  • Work closely with and under the direction of the Board of Directors.
  • Work with Board of Directors to develop priorities, strategies, workplans and budgets.
  • Serve as a spokesperson including representing the Alliance before the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council, National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Congress and other local, regional and national decision-makers.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings of the Board of Directors and various committees.
  • Collect annual dues and special assessments.
  • Identify and pursue potential funding sources.
  • Prepare the Alliance's policy statements, testimony, presentations and other materials with the Board of Directors, staff and consultants.
  • Monitor and comply with the approved budget.
  • Supervise staff and consultants.
  • Report to the Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in natural resource management, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years work experience in fisheries, coastal resource management and/or related business.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to build agreement and alliances among people with diverse interests.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and coordinate people.
  • Experience working with government agencies and legislative bodies.
  • Willing and able to work out of a home office and travel.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected start date for this position is August 2008. The Shareholders' Alliance offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience.
