- One possibility is to look at environmental programs within the military:
- Getting out? Try looking for civilian jobs in the Department of Defense through the federal jobs page.
- Another option is to target environmental companies that are Department of Defense contractors; many of the firms listed in EcoEmploySM are Defense contractors.
- Many military people go into civilian law enforcement. Environmental police units have formed in several states, including New York and Massachusetts. The state government jobs page has links to official listings of state jobs.
- Be aware that most, if not all, states have hiring preferences for qualified military personnel. Information about the preferences is usually contained in the application forms, most of which are downloadable.
- Become familiar with veteran hiring preferences in the federal government. The Office of Personnel Management has preference information in the OPM Web site. More information on federal employment can be found on the federal jobs page.
- A private organization that works with the military is the Center for Ecological Management of Military Lands.
- Look for recruiters that specialize in hiring people out of the military.
